Well - I have some nice notes for you and Richard. But - since you told me GROOVE - - I wrote GROOVE!! Some rubato sections for you and Richard - but the groove part really needs bass and drums to make it G R O O V E > > > Maybe you could play the piece as a duet but we would have to figure out many different things to make that happen musically. If you want only a DUET - marimba and clarinet - then I must alter the concept and write for that. To do both is kind of 1/2 one and 1/2 another - and not quite 1 whole thing - - you know what I mean?
What's the rest of your Carnegie program besides my piece? All duet - or other musicians?
OK - it will be great whatever - - but let me know. Now that I've written this piece, of course I "vote" for bass & drums. Piano is not necessary in this piece - - I conceived it for quartet: you, Richard, bass & drums (it's got a "Steve Gadd beat" - he'll be groove-happy - and of course, Eddie would be perfect!! He's always perfect!!)
much love from Gayle & myself to you and Richard - -
